与以前拍京味剧只需要“北京做派”不同，庄为天这个角色是“满汉宫廷菜传人，美国总统、法国参赞都吃过他的菜”的名厨。刘佩琦透露，自己平时不做菜，所以这个功课并不好做。在拍摄现场，他只能请教做菜的厨师，临时恶补，“我们会专门拿出一些时间来了解做这个菜的程序，保证菜端到桌子上的色香味那种效果。在拍戏过程中，也会有一个厨师指导我们专业动作，包括刀工、摆盘等，都有现场指导。”

《什刹海》讲的是美食，说的是传承。剧中老辈人公园遛弯、打太极、唱京戏的传统生活被年轻人的新理念影响，年轻人追求新鲜刺激的同时也被老辈人的德行与匠心感动，几个主要人物时而会发生新老观念的碰撞，而关晓彤、吴磊等年轻演员却让刘佩琦一直“点赞”：“他们讲规矩、讲礼貌，尤其在艺术创作中，在诠释角色时的那种刻苦和认真，真是值得我学习。虽然我是老演员了，但从年轻孩子身上，我也得汲取营养，这是很难得的一次，是非常和谐的一次合作。”

刘佩琦说，自己特别希望能通过这部戏让年轻的孩子多了解北京，了解北京的人文地域文化。“现在网络发达，孩子们的视野已经不局限在北京，局限在中国的某个城市。但是北京的文化传承，还得一代代传下去，尤其是北京的孩子。比如我们这个戏里演晓晓的关晓彤，她就是北京孩子，深受传统文化影响。她为什么这么懂规矩、懂礼貌。琴书大师关学曾是她的爷爷，家风就在这儿，这个东西还是很珍贵的。”

珍视“修德无人见，行善有天知”

在《什刹海》中，庄为天与金大妈这对老夫妻时不时“发糖”，惹得观众们十分羡慕，不少网友说“金大妈就是庄大爷的‘软肋’”。对此，刘佩琦很认同，“金大妈是王府格格出身，同在一个院里长大、生活，他能够高攀，娶到格格，真是太幸福了，他就觉着他在生活中也是一个成功者。”格格很有文化，琴棋书画样样精通，对事物的认知也很准确，所以庄为天一生都沉浸在爱中。“婚姻在他这儿是永恒的。能够娶到金大妈，就是他一辈子的幸福”，刘佩琦说。

刘佩琦表示，和庄为天一样，自己在生活中也特别爱开玩笑，自己的生活理念就是“奔着幸福，奔着快乐的方向走”。为了演活剧中这对儿“老年CP”，刘佩琦在表演时还特意在老两口之间设置了很多有趣的桥段：“比如我把桔子皮扔到她的画案上，她头都不抬把桔子皮扔回去，正好扔在了庄为天的脸上，这些小小的生活细节都是在表现老两口的感情。”

在刘佩琦看来，庄为天这个角色也有他的缺点，比如很传统，厨艺传男不传女导致后继无人，甚至曾经篡改过儿子的志愿，逼他上中专学厨，就像有网友说的“封建大家长作风”，做错事也不低头向小辈道歉，还反对女儿嫁给外国人。但这些“缺点”，也恰恰是庄为天这一代人对传统文化的恪守，与《什刹海》戏剧矛盾的核。“一个年代有一个年代的认知，庄为天代表的是传统的，带有普遍性的，老辈人的一种观念。”
