长白山天池到底有没有“怪兽”？对于这个世纪之谜，众说纷纭。一些严谨的自然科学工作者对此持否定态度。他们认为，天池是火山爆发后积水形成的湖泊，而且长白山天池火山最近的一次喷发就在300年前。天池温度甚低，每年又有八九个月的冰雪期，里面很少有生物，不存在大型生物赖依存的食物链。何况蛇颈龙之类的爬行动物早在6500万年前就已灭绝，怎么可能在天池里出现？如果说它是在天池里残留下来的，可是天池的历史这样短，“怪兽”经过由简单到复杂，由低等到高等，从一些微小生命发展起来是不可思议的。

东北师范大学祝廷成教授认为“天池怪兽”很可能是大鱼。他说，前几年他去朝鲜考察，朝鲜科研人员认为天池怪兽应该是他们做实验放养在天池里的虹鳟鱼，有的长了二三十年，大的近十斤重，可能被看到的人误认为是怪兽了。
