The chess-board is the world: the pieces are the phenomena of the universe; the rules of the game are what we call the laws of nature. The player on the other side is hidden from us. We know that his play is always fair, just and patient. But also we know, to our cost, that he never overlooks a mistake, or makes the smallest allowance for ignorance .

托马斯·H. 赫胥黎(1825—1895)，英国博物学家。少年时代主要自学，曾自称是达尔文进化论的总代理人，与当时宗教势力作斗争，曾任英国皇家学会秘书、会长等要职。对海洋生物学、比较解剖学、古生物学、人类形态学有很多贡献，是人类起源问题第一个提出者。主要著作有《人在自然界中的地位》(Zoological Evidences as to Man's Place in Nature ，1863)，《论有机界现象的起因》，《天演论》(Evolution and Ethics ，1893)(即《进化论与伦理学》)。
