Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, or BPPV, is a common vestibular disorder characterized by brief episodes of dizziness and vertigo triggered by changes in head position. These episodes can be quite disorienting and may lead to a loss of balance, making everyday activities challenging. The condition arises when otoconia, tiny calcium carbonate crystals in the inner ear, become dislodged and enter the semicircular canals, disrupting the normal flow of endolymphatic fluid and sending incorrect signals to the brain about head position.
Treatment for BPPV often involves a series of repositioning maneuvers, such as the Epley maneuver, which can help to move the displaced otoconia back to their original location. In some cases, vestibular rehabilitation exercises may also be recommended to improve balance and reduce symptoms. While BPPV can be a frustrating condition, it is generally not associated with serious health risks and can often be managed effectively with appropriate treatment.
